BIG LEAF MAPLE
The Big Leaf Maple (Acer macrophyllum) is a beautiful tree that is widely dispersed throughout the park. It the largest leaves out of all of the Maple trees. The leaves have 5 incised palmate lobes, and they range from 15-30 centimeters across. This tree is deciduous so it loses all of its leaves in the fall and winter. They produce greenish-yellow flowers that eventually give seeds. Big Leaf Maples prefer a dry hardwood forest opposed to damp grounds but they can withstand both.
DOUGLAS FIR
The Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) is a conifer species. It is a tree that is extremely common in the Pacific Northwest and not hard to find since it is so abundant. This tree can live anywhere from 500 years to 1000 years old! It is easily identifiable by its bark which is long and streaky, and its leaves which are pine-like and spiraled.
This is a sample of the type of leaves to look for. You will notice in this picture how they are spiraled! Usually the tips of the leaves are a lot lighter that the rest of the leaves because of new growth.
There are a lot of trees located in Ravenna Park. Some are old-growth trees and some are new growth, most are native, some are non-native.
