ECOLOGICAL DISTURBANCE (STATION #9)

FALLEN TREES

Initially, I did not know why fallen trees would be considered an ecological disturbance. I do not consider myself to be exactly well versed when it comes to natural environments. The more I researched this issue and thought about it logically, the more it made sense. Fallen trees have can have many impacts on the ecology of an area but the specific impact I will point out is- the creation of Gap/Patches. When a tree falls and it creates a gap the species that are within the newly formed gap are suddenly exposed to new weather conditions. For example; if a plant species that does best in the shade gets exposed to sunlight because of a fallen tree, it will die off because it cannot adapt. Fallen trees can be a big stress factor on the species that are forced to be confronted with this issue!

LANDSLIDES

The simple answer to why landslides are an ecological disturbance is because they kill off species!
